PHM India: Universal health care in India: Making it public, making it a reality

The seemingly impressive growth of the Indian economy hides many social ills, one of which is the failure to provide health care for all. The 2012 release of the Planning Commission’s draft strategy for universal health coverage (UHC) was seen as an attempt to address the situation and it attracted considerable attention, and criticism. At the heart of the debate is the proposal that UHC could be best achieved through greater participation of the already dominant private sector, and by scaling up health insurance schemes.

PHM Ghana: New Leadership

After a transparent, consultative process, PHM-Ghana has elected Mr. Kingsley Pereko as our new National Coordinator. The need for renewed leadership is mostly because of the need to structure our work in Ghana a bit more and bring in new leadership. Kingsley is a lecturer in Community Medicine at the University of Cape Coast in Ghana. He has been an active member of PHM-Ghana for over three years now (especially in mobilizing a team in Cape Coast, but also nationally).

PHM at 'Health R&D as a Global Public Good'

On April 24th PHM some PHM people attended an event on "Health R&D as a Global Public Good" co-organized by the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies and the Harvard Global Health Institute. The purpose of the event was to examine how to secure collective action to provide global public goods through research and development (R&D) and innovation for the specific health needs of low‐ and middle‐income countries.

Health Now Mahrajan

The Health Now Festival, which took place March 2012, was conceptualized and coordinated by Dr. May Haddad (PHM Lebanon/Canada) during her visit in Canada.  This inaugural global health festival was about celebration, learning with fun, exchanging experiences, and enhancing the global health network through interactive exhibits, dialogue circles, a street parade songs and conversation.

WHO Watch: activities during WHA66 and EB133 - May 2013 Geneva

The forthcoming World Health Assembly (WHA), taking place from 20-28 May 2013 in Geneva, will be monitored, advocated to and reported upon  by PHM health activists under the ‘Democratising Global Health Governance Initiative: WHO Watch’.
