The 30th anniversary of the 1978 Alma Ata Declaration was marked by a celebration in Brussels on October 17, 2008. During the program, two PHM activists were interviewed on the significance of Alma Ata and the way forward in the struggle for the right to health. Here are some excerpts from this interview with Arturo Quizhpe from Ecuador and Wim De Ceukelaire from Belgium.

The Jan Swasthya Abhiyan (JSA) is the country circle of the Global People’s Health Movement (www.phmovement.org). It was formed in the year 2000 when several national networks collectively organised the first Jan Swasthya Sabha during which over 2000 participants adopted the Indian Peoples Health Charter and launched the JSA to work towards achieving health for all and for equity in health.

Second National Health Assembly (NHA2)

More than 10,000 people from across the United States and around the world converged in Atlanta, Georgia, earlier this summer for the first-ever U.S. Social Forum. Nearly a thousand workshops, plenaries, concerts, and film screenings addressed the theme “Another world is possible. Another US is necessary.”

ATLANTA, Jul 2 (IPS) - In all, the crowds were huge, the
workshops passionate and inspiring, and participants made ideological,
relational and personal gains, both large and small.
