EXHIBITIONS
1. One in Nine Campaign
Venue: UWC library
The 1-in-9 Campaign (a South African activist women's organisation - see (http://www.oneinnine.org.za) presents a photographic exhibition and launched a report "We were never meant to survive" Violence in the lives of HIV positive women in South Africa". The report, and exhibition, are the product of six months research with two focus groups of HIV positive women in South Africa (in Gauteng and in the Eastern Cape). The focus groups comprised women working with TAC and Positive Women's Network, in conjunction with the 1-in-9 Campaign; they explored personal experiences as community members, activists, and recipients of public HIV programs; recording their struggles to survive at the intersection of the HIV epidemic, public health response, and widespread gender discrimination, violence and poverty.
The exhibition consists of photographs taken by the 9 women in the Gauteng focus group; participants worked with a professional photographer to create images (some taken by the women themselves, some "directed" by the women to capture experiences and perceptions reflected in the report). The exhibition, with some text from the report, could be put up at the PHA3 as a "stand alone" exhibit.
2. Street Talk
Venue: UWC Library
Street Talk films uninhibited discussions about sexuality, politics, racism, HIV, drugs, violence, poverty, xenophobia, and dreams. Teenagers, old age pensioners, lesbians, foreigners, and gangsters kick back and hold forth with no topic taboo, no opinion too radical. We will have an installation that provide an inside view of what it is like for the ordinary South African facing these issues on a daily basis.
During PHA3, participants will have the opportunity to be part of a 4 screen installation whereby they get drawn into the lives, ideas and testimonies of people living in South Africa.
