The PHM approach to human rights and Health for All

This two page summary statement on PHM's position on the Right to Health has been developed by several PHM persons-- all of whom participated in the 2 year process to develop phase 2 of the Right to Health Campaign.  This was shared in sub-plenaries and workshops devoted to the Right to Health during PHA3 in Cape Town from 6-11 July, 2012.
This summary is an excellent distillation of the the longer position papers and documents that were developed by the Right to Health commission between 2010 and 2012. 

Debate and Action about the Social Determinants of Health

Faced with the multidimensional crisis affecting the world, the civil society movements and organizations propose some ideas to contribute to the debate about the social determination of health. Declaration by Public Interest Civil Society Organisations and Social Movements, 18 October

URGENTLY REQUIRED ACTIONS BY MEMBER STATES AND WHO ON THE KEY AREAS

  • Implement equity-based social protection systems and maintain and develop effective publicly provided and publicly financed health systems that address the social, economic, environmental and behavioural determinants of health with a particular focus on reducing health inequities.
  • Use progressive taxation, wealth taxes and the elimination of tax evasion to finance action on the social determinants of health.
  • Recognise explicitly the clout of finance capital, its dominance of the global economy, and the origins and consequences of its periodic collapses.
