Global Health Watch 4 : Call for your experiences!


The Global Health Watch (GHW) coordinating group has identified broad areas to be covered in the 4th issue of the Watch, which is officially scheduled for release in October, 2014.  We are now seeking your assistance in sourcing case studies that can add value to each of these important topics. These case studies and testimonies will form part of the electronic accompaniment to the development of the Watch and in some cases may also appear in the electronic or print edition of the Watch.

PHM calls for Promoting Health for All and Social Justice in the Era of Global Capitalism


Activists from the PHM met during the WHO 8th Global Conference on Health Promotion to critique the official Conference Statement and develop a progressive call for action based on strong social justice principles. The draft statement reflects our deliberation and is being circulated for further comment and debate.

PHM Solidarity Statement on The Deterioration of the Health Situation within the Central African Republic


PHM is deeply concerned at the deterioration of the health situation within the Central Africa Republic (CAR). The conflict between rebels and government has resulted in the breakdown of law and order, resulting in a health crisis characterised by looting and destruction of health facilities and food stocks by rebels and armed bandits and treatment interruptions with the potential increased risk of diseases to people of CAR.

The PHM urges the WHO's member states to set a clear date, soon, to start discussions on research and development treaty

As a part of watching the 66th World Health Assembly, the PHM developed a statement which was read during the 5th day of the Assembly.

The statement congratulated the WHO on providing leadership to the entire process to promote “Health
Research and Development" in a framework that delinks the cost of innovation from access to health products. In addition, it urges the member states to set a date, in the next few months, to start the discussions on research and development treaty.

PHM comments on some of the WHA agenda items!


PHM submitted to country delegations of various countries, comments and suggestions regarding some of the items appearing on the agenda of the 66th World Health Assembly.

Over the last week members of the PHM have been working through the 66th WHO agenda with the assistance of experts from a number of collaborating networks and NGO's. This workshop was part of our Democratising Global Health Governance Initiative which involves both watching and advocay. In the course of these discussions we have prepared the following comments.

WHO watchers in action!


The World Health Assembly commences Monday 20 May.  Among the critical issues that member states will discuss:  non-communicable diseases, gender, climate change, universal health coverage and development goals from 2015.  PHM’s group of WHO ‘watchers’ have spent the last week working through the agenda and evaluating the proposals coming before the Assembly against the principles of the People’s Charter for Health (see

WHO Watch: activities during WHA66 and EB133


The coming World Health Assembly, taking place may 2013 in Geneva, is bringing PHM health activists together within the broad initiative ‘Democratising Global Health Governance – WHO watch’. WHO Watch is a resource for advocacy and mobilisation and an intervention in global health governance.  From 15-31st of May PHM health activists will ‘watch’ WHO.

The Palestinians and all supporters of freedom worldwide tribute the 17th of April, which marks the Palestinian Prisoners’ Day by dedicating a wide range of events and activities for supporting the Palestinian prisoners residing in 17 Israeli prisons in addition to the secret detains, which is administrated by the Israeli occupation; the presence of some of those secret prisons were discovered and others was disclosed by the Israeli occupation forces. 

PHM calls for action during the WSF in Tunis


The People’s Health Movement (PHM) and Oxfam-France call for actions towards democratizing global health governance, realizing equitable and universal health care systems, and addressing social determinants of health. During the WSF 2013, the PHM jointly with Oxfam-France is organizing three workshops.

The Struggle for Health - An online training opportunity for health activists


The International People’s Health University (IPHU) of the People’s Health Movement (PHM) announces The Struggle for Health as a short on line training course for young health activists.

The Struggle for Health - A training opportunity for health activists (Los Angles, California, USA


The People’s Health Movement – USA and California State University-Northridge present an IPHU short course about health equity in a local and global context. The course will cover primary health care, political economy of health, and social determinants of health through the lens of migrant experiences. Students, health workers, activists, and anyone interested in understanding more about the rights-based approach to health should apply!

The course will be organized in Los Angeles, California, USA from July 20-28, 2013. Application is open!

The Third People's Health Assembly (PHA3)

After travelling from Bangladesh (2000) to Cuenca (2005), the People’s Health Assembly landed in Cape Town South Africa and gathered some 800 health activists from 90 countries from July 6 to 11, 2012!

The Final Cape Town Call to Action


The Cape Town Call to Action was discussed throughout the PHA3 in Cape Town from July 6 to 11, 2012. The final draft was discussed in the assembly's final plenary and was open for comments and suggestions for another month. Now the CTA is finalised!
