Note on Right to Health activities by Jan Swasthya Abhiyan (PHM-India) during recent period

Since its formation following the ‘National Health Assembly’ in 2000, within Jan Swasthya Abhiyan (PHM-India) there has been a strong perspective to oppose the weakening of public health systems, to make health systems accountable and effective, to counter commercialization of health care, and to ensure access to health care for all within a broader ‘Right to health’ framework.

Re: Summits on Intellectual Property by George Washington University India Project and CII
and
Re: Ethics of interaction with Indian Judges, law and policy makers at these summits

Hon’ble Minister,

We, the undersigned public interest organizations and individuals from different fields, note with great concern meetings and "interactions" being organised annually with Indian judges and policy makers on intellectual property as part of so-called summits on intellectual property (IP Summits).

These IP summits in major cities of India are organised annually by the India Project of the George Washington University of the United States, and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) with funding from multinational pharmaceutical companies, industry associations and corporate law firms. Even though George Washington University claims to organise and co-sponsor with the Confederation of Indian Industry, industry sponsorship is prominently displayed at the IP summit (See annexure 1).

Statement of the Alliance for People's Health: International Condemnation of Philippine military and police action against health workers in Rizal, Philippines

February 9, 2010

Ambassador Brilliantes
130 Albert Street, Suite 606
Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
K1P 5G4

Dear Ambassador Brillantes,

We are writing to condemn the action of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and Philippine National Police at 6:15am February 6th, 2010, when they forcibly detained medical doctors, nurses, and community health workers (CHWs) in Rizal, Philippines during their health skills training-seminar in the house of Dr. Melecia Velmonte.

Health workers who extend their volunteer services to under-served regions are essential to the health and well-being of regular Filipinos who live in these areas. Their service and advocacy work for the community is vital when virtually no other health infrastructure exists.

The arrest of 43 health workers in the Philippines is an attack on the right to health of the poor

Third World Relief Fund, a Belgian development NGO, and intal, a solidarity movement with people's movements in the Philippines and other countries, condemns the brazen arrest of 43 doctors and health workers in the Philippines. We consider it an attack on the Council for Health and Development (CHD), our long-time partner organization in the Philippines, and on the right to health of the Philippine people.

Novartis threatens Indian generic drug industry

For decades, India has been known as the “pharmacy of the developing world” for its ability to supply lifesaving generic drugs at a fraction of the cost of those with brand names. People living in India and throughout the Global South rely heavily on these affordable medicines, and without them antiretrovirals, cancer drugs, and hundreds of other basic medications would be out of reach for millions.

Elections in India: Fight for a healthy future

It's time for promises - generous, sweeping and all-encompassing. Whenever elections are scheduled, politicians of all hues and affiliations come up with promises, of turning life for the common man into a rosy idyll. Looking through my file of political promises over the last fifteen, I have these samples chosen at random from a thick stack of clippings -

Health groups: Defend affordable drug treatment in India

Bayer sues Indian Government to retain monopoly rights / International coalition demands protection of generic pharmaceuticals

Health groups call on German drugmaker Bayer to cancel the suit against the Indian government and domestic drug company Cipla in order to protect affordable drug treatment. The organizations fear that the fate of generics in India may hinge on this case and that thousands of Indians will die without affordable pharmaceuticals.

Health and human security in West Papua

Recent publications have highlighted the impact of human rights violations, poverty and extraction of natural resources on the health status of the indigenous people of West Papua. However, the Australian medical literature has so far remained silent on this issue.

Long-standing allegations of violence being perpetrated against Papuan civil society are supported by accounts given by West Papuan refugees involved in an Australian-based study.
