Statement of the Alliance for People's Health: International Condemnation of Philippine military and police action against health workers in Rizal, Philippines

February 9, 2010

Ambassador Brilliantes
130 Albert Street, Suite 606
Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
K1P 5G4

Dear Ambassador Brillantes,

We are writing to condemn the action of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and Philippine National Police at 6:15am February 6th, 2010, when they forcibly detained medical doctors, nurses, and community health workers (CHWs) in Rizal, Philippines during their health skills training-seminar in the house of Dr. Melecia Velmonte.

Health workers who extend their volunteer services to under-served regions are essential to the health and well-being of regular Filipinos who live in these areas. Their service and advocacy work for the community is vital when virtually no other health infrastructure exists.

PHM Right to Health and Health Care Campaign update January 2010

It is time again to give an update where the campaign has gone since the middle of last year.

Kenya has joined the campaign and will be funded shortly. Djibouti has sent a plan and is reworking its budget. Togo got funding to hold its workshop to present the assessment results and prepare an action plan. Cameroun has sent a plan for the same workshop and is reworking its budget for that. Benin has promised a plan for the workshop shortly. Morocco did an assessment of the RTH --without PHM funding-- and sent us a copy. Ecuador worked on RTH wording for the new national Constitution. India is successfully carrying out a community based monitoring of the RTH. Guatemala has completed the assessment and we are expecting the report. Liberia recently contacted us very preliminarily.

The arrest of 43 health workers in the Philippines is an attack on the right to health of the poor

Third World Relief Fund, a Belgian development NGO, and intal, a solidarity movement with people's movements in the Philippines and other countries, condemns the brazen arrest of 43 doctors and health workers in the Philippines. We consider it an attack on the Council for Health and Development (CHD), our long-time partner organization in the Philippines, and on the right to health of the Philippine people.

Novartis threatens Indian generic drug industry

For decades, India has been known as the “pharmacy of the developing world” for its ability to supply lifesaving generic drugs at a fraction of the cost of those with brand names. People living in India and throughout the Global South rely heavily on these affordable medicines, and without them antiretrovirals, cancer drugs, and hundreds of other basic medications would be out of reach for millions.
