PHM Benin celebrated world day of cultural diversity for dialogue and development and the Week of solidarity with the Peoples of Non-Self-Governing Territories
Benin chapter of People’s Health Movement has organized two discussions on the people’s charter for health followed by a Survival International poster distribution to celebrate on Tuesday 21 May the world day of cultural diversity for dialogue and development and on June 1, the week of solidarity with the Peoples of Non-Self-Governing territories.
Every 21 May, United Nations celebrates the world day of cultural diversity for dialogue and development as an opportunity for economical and social development. Through its youth section, PHM Benin has discussed with young people including students in Cotonou on Benin’s cultural diversity and the threats to peace and health for all. In Benin, there are at least 52 languages for a population of around 10 million people. While Fon language is spoken by 40%, some other languages groups represent less than 1% of the population. Each of these groups should have access to the information they need for their wellbeing and this shows the relevance of the right to information concept and PHM Benin’s information access project. It is a pathway to health for all. Discussing with young people on PCH and its link to cultural rights helps prevent conflict and helps create sustainable dialogue between groups. We have distributed to young people posters of Survival International showing how people’s lives are threatened worldwide.
