Ramalla (Palestine), 17th July, 2006: The Israeli offensive in Lebanon and Palestine is collective retribution against civilians in breach of the Fourth Geneva Convention and carries a high risk of all out war.

Governments Must Move Forward with Global R&D Framework at World Health Assembly

As health ministers meet in Geneva at the World Health Assembly (WHA) next week, the medical humanitarian organisation Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) is calling on governments to overhaul the way medical research and development (R&D) is prioritised and financed, and support a resolution proposed by Kenya and Brazil for a "global framework on essential health R&D." Despite gathering increasing support from many governments, this resolution has faced consistent obstruction on the part of the WHO Secretariat.

Dr. Mathura Prasad Shrestha, former Minister for Health, Government of Nepal, former Professor of Community Health, Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu, current Head of Essential Health Research, Nepal, head of Resource Centre for Primary Health Care and above everything else, an activist par excellence, who even as the Minister for Health, led a protest against his own government when an unjust law was about to be passed, was arrested in Kathmandu this morning. Police personnel broke down his door, entered his house in Kathmandu without a warrant and took him away forcibly.
