The People’s Health Movement’s Position on a Framework Convention for Global Health

The idea of a Framework Convention for Global Health (FCGH)has been promoted as an opportunity to advance global health equity and the right to health. The idea has promise but needs more thought regarding its risks, obstacles, and strategy. 

Planning Commission of India to hand over Health Care to Corporate Sector

The draft health chapter of the 12the Five Year Plan document is being discussed for final adoption by the Planning Commission by the end of August, 2012. The Jan Swasthya Abhiyan (Peoples Health Movement – India) expresses concern regarding the present recommendations and plans outlined in the draft chapter.

Free Trade Agreement with EU threatens health services in the Philippines

 

The Aquino government is close to sealing a partnership cooperation agreement (a prerequisite for a free trade agreement or FTA) with the European Union (EU) that, among others, commits to liberalizing trade and investments and loosening rules on intellectual property rights (IPRs). According to IBON, the proposed EU-PH FTA is a practical surrender of national sovereignty as the Aquino government has given up economic protection needed for self-reliance and national development.

 

Climate and Health Summit

On December 4, 2011, Health Care Without Harm is co-organizing the First Climate and Health Summit, which will take place parallel to the UNFCCC meetings at the Tropicana Hotel in Durban, South Africa.

The event will bring key health sector actors from around the world together to discuss the impacts of climate change on public health and solutions that promote greater health, as well as economic equity between and within nations.

PHM Oz Forum on Trade and Health in the Pacific. Report now available.

Australia and New Zealand announced in 2009 that they were commencing negotiations with 14 Pacific island countries for a new trade agreement to be called PACER-Plus. This new agreement would replace existing trade arrangements in the region.

PACER-Plus has the potential to enhance or jeopardise health and health care in the Pacific island countries. The current negotiations provide the opportunity to get it right, to promote economic development in the Pacific, to progress Health for All, and make progress towards realising the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
