Europe News: February 2001
Our activities in the region have centred around 1) the charter 2) ideas
and preparations for the WHA both this year and next 3) building up the
network 4) particular work around GATS.
The Charter
-
This has been translated and published in Russian by the St.
Petersburg group. It looks great! They had a meeting with over 200 people
and the vice chair of the St. Petersburg Legislative Assembly will take up
the charter there.
-
They are now contacting NGOs and others in former republics and sending
copies of the charter to them.
-
An international group worked hard on the French translation,
which is now with Lucien in GK. He is looking into prospects of printing it.
Pam tried to contact Yusupha Cesay to get an estimate of numbers needed
for French speaking Africa.
-
Another collective effort from the two groups represented at the PHA.
Translation of Charter into Ukrainian has finished.
They propose to publish the Charter in Ukrainian medical newspaper
"Health" during the next one or two weeks.
The Text of Charter will also sited on WEB page of MAMA-86 and on WEB
page Dniepropetrovsk Association Quality of Human Life.
The Charter will be sent to 327 Ukrainian NGO by e-mail.
-
There is an unofficial Dutch translation for more comments
(contact is Bert de Belder)
-
Alexis Benos is organising a meeting in Thessaloniki Greece the 6
February with David Sanders and himself presenting the Greek
translation of the People's Charter for Health.
Suggestion
Nadine/Maria send us the official Spanish translation and Ghassan
re the Arabic.
Can anyone translate into Chinese? (Free of charge!).
We could then have all the official languages of WHO plus other languages
by the time of The World Health Assembly. (May 2001).
Is there a list of which Indian (plus Nepalese, Bangla) languages the
charter is already translated into?
(NB Some Bangla, Urdu, hard copies - not internet - would be welcomed for
some populations in UK for example.
What about the rest of Europe? (Turkish?)
Planning meeting
We are planning a Europe meeting on April 4th here in London to discuss
this year’s WHA and the idea of an alternative summit for May 2002. Keep
the ideas coming in as we consult with other regions about this. This
meeting will begin at midday in Friends House - opposite Euston Station.

more than four years. Bas will officially leave the office staff on 31 March
2001.
Bert is co-ordinating NGO activities with Belgian NGOs on the Brussels
LDC-III Conference on the Least Developed Countries.

Alexis, the International Association for Health Policy is organising its
12th European Conference in London the 9-12 May 2001. Have a look to our

goals.
